Solving Common Problems
(Press your browser's "Back" button to return
to the lecture.)
Here are some suggestions for how to solve common problems that might arise
when trying to view a Web Lecture.
- Problem: No video window
appears, or you are told that you must download a plug-in
Solution: RealPlayer is required to view a Web Lecture. If you do
not have RealPlayer installed then you should download it here.
Some lectures can be viewed using QuickTime instead of RealPlayer. You
will then have to download and install QuickTime before you can view the
lecture. You can do so here.
- Problem: RealPlayer won't
start.
Solution: You may have an old version of RealPlayer which cannot
play newer files. The solution is to download the latest version of
RealPlayer. You will find instructions for doing this here.
- Problem: The video
constantly pauses for "Buffering..."
Solution: Either you are connected to the internet via a slow link
(eg. modem dial-up) or there is a lot of congestion on your network.
If you are connected via a slow link then you might get better performance
by selecting the "audio only" version of the lecture.
If the interruptions occur during the slide changes then the problem may
be the extra bandwith required to load the slide image of the network. You
can get around this problem by pre-loading the slide images by viewing the
Lecture Index. To do so,
Press the
button.
If
you are suffering from network congestion you might try viewing the lectures
at another time of day when there is less network activity. You might also
want to discuss the problem with your network administrator, who may be able
to give you advice or make improvements to your local network.
- Problem: The slides don't
change as the lecture progresses.
Solution: This is a known problem with the plug-in video version
under Unix. If you are using Unix then you should view the "detached" version
of the lecture, which will display the RealPlayer video in a separate window.
- Problem: The "Go To Slide"
menu doesn't work.
Solution: This selector menu requires scripting to function
properly. Netscape users must enable JavaScript to use this feature, while
Internet Explorer users must enable ActiveX scripting. Here are instructions
for both:
- Netscape:
- To enable JavaScript, pull down Edit -> Preferences and click on
"Advanced". Then push the button next to "Enable JavaScript".
- Internet Explorer:
- To enable scripting from the Web Lecture server pull down Tools
-> Internet Options... and then push the Security tab. Select the
"Trusted Sites" zone and push the "Sites..." button. Enter the name or
domain of the Web Lecture server in the box marked "Add this Web site to
the zone", and uncheck the box for "Require server verification (https:)
for all sites in this zone, then press "OK".
- Problem: The "Syncronize"
button does not work.
Solution: This feature also requires scripting. Netscape users
must enable JavaScript to use these features, while Internet Explorer users
must enable ActiveX scripting.
